LINCOLN COUNTY, Mo.—The tense standoff that gripped Lincoln County Thursday night reached a tragic conclusion as Thomas Varvera Jr., the assailant who shot a police officer, was discovered dead by authorities. Varvera’s actions prompted a Blue Alert in the region, underscoring the seriousness of the incident.
The harrowing episode unfolded on Creech School Road in Troy, Mo., around 6:45 p.m. Reports from the Missouri State Highway Patrol indicate that Varvera, 54, instigated the violence during a domestic disturbance investigation. As law enforcement officers responded to the scene, Varvera confronted them outside the residence, ultimately firing upon one of the deputies, causing injury.
Missouri State Highway Patrol Cpl. Dallas Thompson recounted the confrontation, stating that Varvera fled to a nearby shed after the shooting, having ignited the house in flames. The sequence of events led to a frantic search as authorities scrambled to locate the armed suspect.
The gravity of the situation prompted the Missouri State Highway Patrol to issue a Blue Alert, signaling a law enforcement officer’s injury or death. With tensions high and the assailant on the loose, communities braced for further developments.
Approximately an hour after the initial altercation, authorities discovered Varvera’s lifeless body inside the shed. The circumstances surrounding his death remain undisclosed, leaving investigators with unanswered questions.
